How can you choose the healthiest option from the takeaway menu?

December 7th, 2010 webmaster No comments

Obviously if you will choose something that is greasy and covered in batter, it’s not going to be as good as say a vegetable curry. You just have to be aware of what’s good for you and what’s terrible for you, that way you can still enjoy your meal while being healthy.

Hopefully here are a few tips for choosing the best and the worst items on the menu, all for a range of takeaways:

Fish and Chips: Although they are slightly unavoidable, chips are one of the worst things to have, others include sausages, cheese and onion pie, steak and kidney pie. As for the best items, fish is your best bet, cod, haddock or plaice are the most healthiest of the lot.

Pizza: Your worst choice would be a deep pan base as this contains the most fat. As for toppings, try and stay away from extra cheese and pepperoni. If you are looking for something healthier, your best bet would be a thin crust with either vegetable or fish toppings.

Chinese: With this, try and avoid crispy and greasy items because it generally means they have been deep fried. The worst items on the menu are sweet and sour battered meat balls, fried rise, and spring rolls. If you are going for the healthy line, stick with items that are steamed. Opting for things like crab and corn soup, beef, chicken, steamed veg and boiled rice are all healthier options.

With Indian food, like Chinese, it is wise to keep away from things that are deep fried and creamy as these are laden with fat. Vegetable curry, chicken tikka, madras or bhuna are your best items to choose for a healthier meal. The healthiest item to have with these would be boiled rice.

Hopefully this will help you to change your order for something more healthier instead of your usual deep pan, triple cheese, pepperoni pizza. As I was writing that, it made me realise that I order all of the bad items, but it’s the same with all foods you eat. The stuff that tastes the best, tends to be the worst for us.

A good takeaway can be ordered online quite easily and could for example be found using the following search ‘takeaway Birmingham‘, ‘Chinese Takeaway Liverpool‘ or Indian Takeaway Birmingham if that is your preference.
