A Young Gentleman Requires Treatment For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Dependency
Nearly eight months ago I had lunch with a forty-one-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship issues.
As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has little or no drive to achieve much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete four semesters of grad school in sports history.
Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look within and see his substance abuse and drinking problems and do something constructive about these issues. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets addiction counseling that leads to long lasting recovery.
It may be asked how therapy would help his drug and alcohol dependency. For starters, there are more than a few newly created physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is absolutely nothing helpful about drug abuse and careless drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the path to financial difficulties, deteriorating health, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, a premature death, and legal problems. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him cope with these conditions more effectively and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.
Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the resolve to do much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he urgently needs some hope for a more productive life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his mental illness and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and stick with his treatment routine.
Benjamin is simply too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehab and get the counseling he needs for his acute depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.
More positive relationships, positive change, self respect, and a meaningful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to seek the professional treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his existence.
