A Physical Education And Health Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcoholism Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged private high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with educational methods that encouraged and stimulated students to learn and to think.

For instance, one Monday morning at 8:30 she addressed the students in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about several of the best known signs of alcoholism from a more specific point of view."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will positively validate that someone with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the greater the probability that she or he is a person who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then told the class members that each pupil would be accountable for examining four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class via a six minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top ten alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After roughly twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she assesses the numbers, she will reveal her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the students in her class to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 10 or 20 seconds, virtually every pupil in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, just about every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, that is, "Do you feel extremely ill when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then explained to the pupils in her class why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcohol dependency. She underlined the fact that the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

In essence this means that when an alcoholic all of a sudden stops drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the person who is alcohol dependent, the pupils started to comprehend the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and stimulated the pupils in her class to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
